Assisted living for a loved one is not a decision you take lightly. There are so many options available and so much to consider. However, not everyone has the luxury of time to find the best option. If your loved one is going through a health crisis – perhaps a broken hip – and simply can’t care for herself/himself, then you want to make quick decisions about what steps you need to take. A quick decision doesn’t have to be a hasty one. You still want an accommodation that is comfortable and suitable for the senior in your life. Here are four steps to follow that will help you find the best option in a short time frame.
Step 1
Identify the care needs of your loved one: Before vetting options be clear about what you want the assisted living staff or facility to do. If your loved one is in and out of hospitals or is currently in hospital, work with the hospital social worker to get a better idea of what she would require. Some seniors may require memory care, skilled nursing, or a physiotherapist so make sure you know what you’re looking for.
Step 2
Recruit friends: Draw up a list of facilities and retirement communities in the neighborhood. Divvy up the places on this list among friends, extended family members and community members. Make sure you share the list of needs you drew up as well as some important questions about food and diet, rules for visitors and so on. If you don’t find volunteers to do this fast enough, hire a local elder care manager who will be able to answer a lot of your questions.
Step 3
Visit the facility in person: Always visit the top three options on the list so that you are able to pick something satisfactory. By having friends’ vet the list you only have to visit a few places to make a decision.
Step 4
Packing and moving: When packing a loved one’s belongings, you should only pack the essentials. He or she might not need much more than that. Consider giving items with sentimental value to family and close friends for safekeeping. If you don’t have the time to pack, find out if the assisted living facility has a furnished suite or room that your loved one can stay in temporarily. This gives you more time and is also an easy transition for your loved one.
